The time has come (and not just because the walrus said), to talk of many things. The tale of Henry York is coming to an end next month when The Chestnut King releases on January 26. No more hanging threads, no more wondering what happens next. No more secrets. This . . . is the end. And I think it’s a good one. I’ll write more about the actual story when the book releases, but for now, I know that there are many folk and folklings out there who have been waiting patiently and impatiently for this book. I’m glad, and quite grateful to you all. And in an attempt to make that wait end sooner–before Christmas, say–I’m going to give away four (4) copies of The Chestnut King right here, in the comments on this post. Random House is going to overnight me four (4) finished copies as soon as they come off the presses on December 15. I will then inscribe them to the winners (or to the winners’ children), and hit the Post Office, getting them to mailmen (or men in brown shorts) who will in turn get them to your door. You will be responsible to get them beneath the tree.
The rules: leave a comment, any comment, one comment only, please. (Multiple family members can enter–there is no age or height requirement). Wait until December 15. On that day, at noon (PST) I will stick every comment into a hat (or maybe a large pot), and then select four (4) winners. The announcement of the winners will go up in this blog by the end of that day.
(Sidenote to my friendly readers around the world: this is an international contest. Comment away. But I can’t assure delivery before Christmas.)
Cheers and Double Cheers and Merry Christmas. Ready, set, fire.

Wow! My four children are already counting the days to January 26. What a pleasant surprise if The Chestnut King were under the tree early! I certainly don’t have children who fight, but they are politely trying to decide who gets to read it first! Hah!

Our whole family is so anxious to read this book. Since God determines the roll of the dice and the name you will pick out of the hat, prayers in this home have already begun.

In addition to rounding out an already-purchased set being given as a Christmas gift, this would give me the chance to read the entire trilogy over winter break, a most welcome change of pace from law school exams. I am going to leave a comment, and I am actually going say something comment-like, unlike the others above.
Nate, thanks for visiting Phoenix, AZ earlier this year for a reading and book signing. If you plan on doing so again next year, you are welcome at our school or church to speak and we’ll even let the publicist set up a table wither his/her fancy glossy poster boards. I’ll make a hubbub.
I will also have my wife leave a comment, but I can’t justify my five-year-old girl doing so. She is still learning to type.

But you are willing to send it international. As we say down here, Good on you, mate.

I’m entering on behalf of my daughter, we read 100 (one hundred) Cupboards and Dandelion Fire together. So she would have entered when she got home. But I just wanted to say maybe we’ll get The Chestnut King in Australia before those Stateside, because a local bookshop website has The Chestnut King listed and says, “Usually Ships in:

In 5 (five) days I could have my copy before you have your four (4)

I have just decreased everybody else’s chances of winning by about… let’s see here….
4/240 = .0166666
4/241 = .0165975
.0166666 – .0165975 = 0.0000691
0.00691% (Your odds are slightly better in both cases because the same person can’t win twice, but I was too lazy to calculate it all out and I probably won’t be number 241 by the time I post this anyway.)

That was a great choice in the second book to have the arrow from Ramoth-Gilead show up. It’s exactly the right sort of significant origin for such a significant object. (Though I wonder how it got to the other worlds… I’m sure there’s a story there…) And of course the villains recognize it only as the Arrow of Chance, because they don’t recognize the signs (such as Micaiah’s prophecy). In actuality, though, it was not chance that slew Ahab. The arrow’s real name, I’m sure, is the Arrow of Providence.

I love books. Really do. I flip through my books and then move on to Mommy and Daddy’s books. My favorites are the C.S. Lewis books on a shelf accessible by little people of my height. They’ve stashed the 100 Cupboards series higher up. Guess they don’t want those destroyed.

I won’t beg because if you’re drawing out of a hat (you might need a dumpster for all of these) you realy can’t decide who gets it, and there’s really no reason you should pick me other than:
I have never won a drawing,
this would make a great Christmas gift (then I would have to borrow it),
I could send you cookies (not really, I don’t bribe people).

P.S. I finished One Hundred (100) Cupboards and then got sick (not because I read it) and was glad to have Dandelion Fire to read.

I chose the first book at the library for my son to read in the car on our road trip. He read it all in one day! Then told me “it didn’t tie things up – there must be another book.” So, here I found this site. It cracks me up when my 11-year-old knows more than his mom!
Hope you pick mine!

I didn’t like Henry York in the first book. But really warmed to him in the
second. The story is what fascinates me. What could be next? I have the
feeling if I understood the ” how to tell a story ” I’d have a clue. You
know like the Pevensies and the robin.
I now have the books on tape as well and am chewing on them..
If I am a choosen one, I would like it really signed by the author. Not
a signed plate. I’m passing it down…..
Merry Christmas!

My kids love your books! In particular, Leepike Ridge and the 100 Cupboards books were very helpful in encouraging one of my sons to dive into books like never before (earlier this year). Now he’s convinced you’re the greatest author ever.
Additionally, I had the privilege of reading Notes from the Tilt-a-Whirl over our family vacation this past September. No time or space to go into a full review here, but I thought your approach was excellent, and enjoyed the laugh-out-loud moments. (loved the butterfly)

Why “Hello” to Henry York? Why not Goodbye, since this is the last book?Do you have some sort of cyclical view of history, like the Hindus? Or maybe you’re going to have some sort of Chiasm, where you come back to the beginning of the book. Anyway, I look forward to winning. And “giveaway?” “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means”
(does verbosity/garrulity/loquacity/protractedness increase your ‘chances’?)
I’ll stop babbling now.

My little boy, Isaiah, 10, would love to win this book!! He adored the Hundred Cupboards and Lee Pike Ridge. (Actually, his parents enjoyed reading the books too even though we know they’re written for kid.) Isaiah wants to be the president someday, so if you pick him, maybe just maybe you are giving the book to the future president. His dad feels that whatever he’ll do with his life, learning Greek and reading Calvin’s commentaries are what he wants his 10 year old doing…and some good quality fiction thrown in there.
