The Chestnut King Book Trailer

Check it out, y’all.

Hmmm, I don’t know. The idea of a trailer for a book has never really made sense to me.

I mean, with a book, everything is left to the imagination. Reading 100 Cupboards, for instance, I have my own (probably erroneous) image of the layout of the farm, the view from the top of Badon Hill, etc.

Trailers tend to show what movie-makers consider the highlights of the movie. But you can’t do that with a book, because those moments are rarely snappy one-liners or sight-gags.

So, that kind of makes a trailer seem pointless to me.

Also, the line “Henry York, it’s time to meet the chestnut king” reeeaaallly grates on me for some reason.

Watching the trailer, I felt a twinge of pain, a wave of shame for liking these books so much.

(I still can’t wait for Chestnut King.)

LOVE book trailers–it’s yet one more hook for the young reader in my mind. I can’t count the number of kids who have been drawn to a book because they have seen a trailer for it. Booktalks are great but so are book trailers!

My sixth graders need to see this one since I am sharing my Holiday TBR List with them on Thursday. Rereading 100 Cupboards and Dandelion Fire in preparation for The Chestnut King is a must for me. Perhaps they will see this trailer and decide to add it to their own Holiday TBR List!

(One question…is there any other place we can view the video?…YouTube and its links are blocked at our school.)

D.A. Tyo: Glad you liked. Is vimeo blocked, too? If not try vimeo.com/8174648.

Mark: Sorry you didn’t like. But your affection for the books is all I really care about. Thanks for that. (No shame needed–at least on this blog).

Cheers.

Yup…vimeo blocked, too. Thanks. I’ll have to post a link to the trailer in my blog.

Love the books, love the trailer, strenuously dislike the voice-over. I suspect that is what “reeeaaallly grates” for Mark in the “…time to meet the Chestnut King” line. It does tend to sound like the last bit of air leaking out of a party balloon, or the fading vocals of someone about to expire….having already taken the last breath. I say bug the bejeebers out of them, until they re-make the voice-over, and this time have them use someone with blood–or dandelion fire–in their veins. (And I do hope that it isn’t someone like Nate doing the voice, or I WILL be in trouble!)

Blessings…and Party On, Y’all. (from Laura Pemberton’s mother.)

Cathy P,

I’m a fan of anyone who “strenuously dislikes” anything. Even though, yes, that is my voice-over that you’re strenuously disliking. What can I say, I’ve always preferred an understated welcome-to-my-tomb delivery. (And I simply couldn’t tolerate the excited versions that were recorded–take my word for it, they were terrible.) Anyhow, knowing your daughter (and, through her, the spirit of the Pembertons) I can understand why you’d prefer a little more cayenne in the delivery. Random House is working on another trailer as well (without my dulcet tones), so we’ll see how that one strikes you.

I’m off. I have more party balloons to deflate before bed (loved that line, btw). Cheers.

Nate,
I have been looking forward to this release, can’t believe its almost here.
Will you be out promoting this book, we enjoyed your last visit.

Hmmm….I just knew it! Complain about the voice-over and it turns out to be Nate. Just for the record, most of the voice over is fine. It was just that last line that didn’t work for me. And I can certainly understand an ‘excited’ version not creating the right sense of mystery. Oh, well. If these ever make it to ‘books on tape’ maybe you can try again! (I want to be encouraging.) BTW…Laura is in France until June and has a picture of French dandelions on her blog—thanks to your books. (She was sort of ’shiny-eyed’ with delight at the dandelion fire thing–if you can imagine Laura that way!)

Take care and congratulations on the safe arrival of your newest Wilson!

Are you going to be doing any book signings for the Chestnut King? Mabey in the midwest? Like Milwaukee? I saw you did one in Madison Wisconsin for the Dandelion Fire book, but I just read the first two books this summer, so I’m late to the party.
I’m a fourth grade teacher at a Hmong school, and I read 100 Cupboards to my class and they loved it! They made a paper wall, and cut out and colored 99 cupboards and pasted them all onto the wall which is currently in the school hallway for all to see. So they would love to see you too.

I’m really looking forward to the Chestnut King. And I’m mad I missed the contest.
